Glowing Dew

Instead of fireworks this year, since it seems like so many fires are running rampid, lets do this instead!
Put 1/4" Mt Dew in bottle, add tiny bit of baking soda and 3 capfuls of hydrogen peroxide. Shake and it glows. Pour on sidewalk to "paint".

Enjoy life

Do you stop and smell the flowers? Do you dance in the rain? Do you jump in mud puddles? We often forget the simplest things in life are often the most rewarding. We get so busy with the "have to dos", we miss out on the heart touching moments.

Drink yourself healthy

As part of our "feeling snappy" project we all tried to drink more water. For some, it has been hard to drink a half gallon a day, let alone a gallon. I was once told you should drink half of your body weight in ounces. So a person weighing 200lbs would drink at least 100oz of water. Whew, thats a lot.
My problem is I often forget. The beginning of March this year, I gave up drinking pop. I try to drink at least a half gallon each day. I have felt better, my skin is clearer and I am not as tired as I used to be. I am a strong believer in the power of water.
I came across this on a friend's pinterest board and LOVE this idea. I fill up two water bottles each morning to remind myself to drink them all, but never thought to actually mark the bottles. What a great idea!
Take the water challenge and start drinking today.

Aspire to be...

Add the finishing touch

A lot of the time I see wonderful handmade items in craft boutiques and think, "if only they had added that finishing touch". You put so much time into your item, don't stop there. If giving as a gift, spruce it up with a handmade tag.
If you have a shop, add your shop info and "to:/from:" so its ready for giving. Plus, the recipient will have your info in case they want to order more.

I LOVE snowmen so when i came across this I started to giggle. What a fun, easy and inexpensive way to dress up your gifts this winter. Kids could do these too! Thanks to Crafts by Amanda for sharing her craftiness.
Check out these cute tags...there are lots of different ones. Instead of the paper flower, how about crocheting one which can be used as a pin or hair clippy?
Crocheted ornaments make wonderful gift tags which keep on giving year after year. These are some I received this past Christmas from snappy friends.

Crocheted Cream

One of my favorite things to give to teachers and neighbors during the holidays is a "cup of cocoa". Throughout the year I collect Christmasy and winter-looking mugs from thrift stores for .25-.50 each. Then I put together this fun gift, complete with cocoa mix, a chocolate dipped spoon for stirring and whipped cream....which is actually a crocheted scrubbie. The free pattern, called "Red Carnation Pot Scrubber" is a wonderful creation by Priscilla Hewitt. Made from white cotton yarn, it is a fun addition to the gift. Its a quick project and one you can work on throughout the year while in the car, watching tv, waiting for kids, etc. It also makes a great bath pouf and baby scrubbie. The pattern is also available on Ravelry.
I received a similar one a few years ago with a cute note attached which read:
The legend of the snowflake
Long ago,
A gleaming star led the way to a
Child born in a manger.
Today it is believed that
Snowflakes are little pieces of that
special start that leads us to
The Light of the World - Jesus.

Doing boutiques? Make the scrubbies and attach the saying, typed on a cute tag or make up the mug sets and wrap in cellophane so its ready for giving.

Brookie goes to the farm

Some friends asked us to check on their house while they are on vacation. Brookie loved the adventure!
She thought she was tough and challenged the turtle.
Then visited the ducks. They were noisy and smelled weird.

One FABULOUS Year!

This morning, while sitting in my soccer chair and enjoying the breeze in my backyard, I have been planning for the upcoming months. With sketch book and calendar in hand, it hit me. It's been over ONE YEAR since Snappy Tots debuted on Facebook. June 11 to be exact. What a year it has been!
During this past year, I have met TONS of outstanding people from all over the world. You have renewed my faith in humanity and taught me so many things about life and myself. I have grown more the past 6 months and become a much stronger person, thanks to all of your support. Your words of encouragement, the sunshine you share daily and your positive posts have been unbelievable.
The earliest post I could find, that someone actually liked or commented on, was this one. The angry fowl obviously put snappy on the map and really jump started my page.

Thanks to people like Joyce, my page quickly grew and allowed me (us) to do many outstanding things.
From August - November, people from over 30 states and 3 countries made beanies for our brave soldiers in Afghanistan as part of our Beanies for Bravery Project. It has been a dream come true to send over 750 beanies so far. I could not have done this without snappyland. Its almost time to start sending boxes again.
There are now over 150 snappy tots patterns, MANY of those inspired by you. We just finished a humungous giveaway, featuring vendors I have looked up to for a long time. We raised over $500 in memory of a sweet little angel. We have shared in weddings, births, milestones and even tragedies. We have become a support system of HUGE proportions and I feel stronger each day, knowing you are there.
I am able to chat with some of the most creative, funny and caring people I have ever met, some of which have become close, personal friends whom I hope to meet in person some day.

I am thankful for you. I am thankful for the time you take on my behalf to share pictures, suggestions, words of encouragement and advice, the help you give others on my page and in groups. Thank you for being incredibly snappy and touching my life in ways you could never know.
My wish for each person reading this is a life of happiness and joy. May peace and laughter be in your heart. Follow your dreams and beliefs and may no one try to bring negativity into your life.

Monday Muffins with snappy struesel

I am loving the beautiful weather and being outside. What a difference fresh air makes.
When my computer died last fall and needed replaced (it was over 10 years old and so it was time to tell it goodbye) I am glad my husband insisted I get a laptop instead of a desktop. I LOVE being able to sit in my soccer chair (their original purpose...these chairs have seen some exciting games before retiring to my backyard) and "work". I truly feel blessed beyond belief. I really am thankful for YOU.

Its hard to believe it is already the middle of June. Soon, we will be on a countdown to Christmas so let's vow today to make someone's Christmas present before the month is over, or at least start.
Each year I get empty shoe boxes from the Payless shoe store in town (boot boxes are the best). As I make my list of friends and family I need presents for I put each name on the end of a box and place it in my craft room closet. This way, as I make something, I can place it in the box. It keeps them organized and clean. I also add non handmade things I pick up along the way so I wont forget where I put it or who I bought it for. If its lotion or something which might get on the handmade item, I make sure to place it in a zip lock bag. I used to store these boxes in the garage, but one year had to give funny shaped candles which had transformed during the heat of Utah summers, and then hardened again in the fall. A friend of mine keeps hers in the attic...but she lives in Alaska. PLUS, our attic is a burial ground for things we have forgotten. Who knows what is up there. As long as it wasn't alive at one point we are good.

Two important things to remember:
  • A new contest is underway and the entries coming in are phenomenal, as always! Entries are due June 25. No, you don't send me the item, just a picture of it.
  • Start working on your advent calendar. This is a CAL (which means Crochet A-Long). Make a few pieces each month and have a wonderful finished decoration for yourself, gift or item to sell.
So...make some snappy muffins and enjoy another wonderful week. As long as you are in snappyland, life is happy.

New contest...join the parade!

Each month in snappyland we have a contest for prizes. This month's theme is "Patriotic Parade". Follow the guidelines for this month's contest, take a fun picture (the better the picture, the better your chance at winning) and email it by the deadline. Its really fun to see everyone's creations so I hope you will join the fun.

June's guidelines:
Patterns to use: ANY by Snappy Tots..use one or a combination of many, but please write down your "recipe" to share with others (i.e. which parts from which patterns). The complete line of patterns can be found in my download shop.
Pictures: PLEASE do NOT put your name, shop name or watermark on your photo. We try to keep them anonymous for the most part.

Deadline: Jun 25, 11:59pm mt (that's 2 hours behind the east coast). Email entries to heidi@snappy-tots.com with subject line "contest" or something similar. A list of contestants will be posted before the contest begins to make sure all entries have been received. You may not receive an email prior to the contest saying your entry was received. No worries.

Prizes: The contest will be posted from June 28th-June 30th as an album on the Snappy Tots fb page and people will be encouraged to "like" their favorites. Winners will be announced the first week of July.
First place: 3 patterns of choice
Second place: 2 patterns of choice
Third place 1 pattern of choice
Family Choice: (heidi's family pix a favorite) 3 patterns of choice
Participation prize: each contestant will receive a 50% off coupon to be used for one purchase during the month of July.

FAQ's

  • Can  extra items be added? yes and no. Yes, you MAY add buttons and ribbons. No you may not add crocheted items made from other patterns.
  • Why can't I add other things? We have had many contests and the best way to be fair to all entries is to limit what can be used. The reason I dont allow other patterns to be used is because all contest items are used to show what can be done with snappy patterns.
  • Can I advertise the contest on my personal or business page? yes, but please do not say which entry is yours.
  • Can I "encourage" customers and friends to vote for my entry? yes, please do BUT please do not bribe people by saying they will receive something in return for voting.
These are fun and I LOVE the creativity that goes into the entries. I also appreciate the time involved and thank you for your participation.

Start planning your ADVENT-ure

It's JUNE and time to start planning your handmade Christmas presents and decorations. Six months from now you will be glad you did (yes, Christmas is just over 6 months away!).
I grew up with parents working in retail so it was a busy time of year around my house. My mom always made tons of presents. As I got older, I started making most of my gifts too. Each year I would always "plan" on starting early, but usually that meant I was lucky if I had something made by Thanksgiving. THEN, one year I started a blanket for my parents in the summer. I carried the thing everywhere and it was done before Halloween. It was the best feeling ever and soon became my goal. I would love to have everything finished so I could just enjoy family for the month of December.
Since my wonderful family reads my blog (love them for that) I can't share what i have up my sleeve this year (going to have to take it out of my sleeve soon because the pokey needles are starting to bug me), but I CAN share one big ADVENT-ure I have been wanting to do for a few years.
Please read THIS POST and join in the fun. I would suggest making a game plan, deciding at least how BIG you want your calendar to be. Later we will make the main calendar part. Pieces should be fairly small, but no need to get your magnifying glass out to make them. About the size of a chocolate chip cookie will work great...the regular size cookies, not those humungo ones wrapped in plastic wrap on the counter at the gas station.
I am a list maker so this time of year I start a list for each person I will be making gifts for and jotting down ideas, collecting favorite colors, updating sizes, etc. Whether you choose a unique gift for each one or go with a theme for the year (i.e. slippers for everyone), start planning now. Grab yarns and supplies while on sale so you can be choosy, not settle for whatever is left on the shelf.
Note to shop owners and boutiquers: you should be cranking out Back to School, Fall and Halloween things NOW! Stay ahead of schedule...yep, should take my own advice.
So, with that said, what are YOU working on this summer? Pack an emergency bag for the car. Fill it with a couple skeins of yarn (mine has a neutral skein...tan, white or black...and ALWAYS some pink), a pencil case with scissors, various hooks, yadda yadda (although i usually have these in my purse too). Always be prepared! You can place it right next to your hubbies "in case of emergency" tote that has all that guy stuff in it...those cables with the red and yellow grabbers on them, that heavy tire bar thingy and whatever other grimy guy thing he needs. Yep, if my car breaks down my biggest concern is if i have cell service.
Enough ramblings of a hooker for today.

Leaf Pattern and Video

Leaf for Emmy's Halo

An easier version of the leaf and video help. Video is kind of corny, but hope it helps.
Leaves (the sample of the full halo has one large and two small leaves.)
For small leaves, use a G hook. For larger leaves, use an I hook.
Note: these are created with a stitch similar to the crocodile stitch.
With hook and worsted weight yarn, ch 5, dc in 3rd ch from hook, sk 1, ch 1, 2dc in last ch, ch 1, turn.
             1. Working around the second dc post from previous step, 4dc, 1 tr. Now, turn the piece, working around next post, 1 tr, 4dc. You will be creating a u shape, ch 1, turn,
             2. Sc 2, hdc 2, 2dc in next st, ch 1, 2dc in next st, hdc 2, sc to end. Sl st in st on other edge of leaf (first st of current row). This will pull the bottom together. Finish off, leaving a tail for attaching to band.
